"Morning Star Shines Brightly After 200 Years"
It had taken some effort to get King Hiram Lodge #12 of Derby to pass a resolution supporting the creation of a lodge in Oxford, which was the original home of what would become Morning Star Lodge . Masons in this rural community had a very long journey by horse and wagon to get to lodge in the "city" , and were anxious to charter a lodge of their own. Efforts had begun in the late 1790's to create a lodge to the north, but had been rebuffed. One evening, the rural brothers, who generally arrived late due to the length of their journey, left their fields in mid-afternoon to be present at the lodge's opening. One of the first orders of business was a motion to request a charter for a new lodge in Oxford. This passed easily, much to the suprise of the latter-arriving Derby members, who had not expected their northern brethren to be in lodge at opening. On October 18, 1804, the Grand Lodge of Connecticut authorized a new lodge in Oxford, to be called Morning Star and numbered 47 on the roster of the 15 year old Grand Lodge. Bro. Abel Wheeler was the charter Worshipful Master, and served in that office for three additional terms during the formative years. Morning Star Lodge moved to Seymour in 1851. |
